What Does Anti-Aging Mean?
“Anti-aging” is one of those phrases that gets tossed around constantly in beauty, skincare, and wellness spaces. But what does it actually mean? At Defy Aesthetic, we like to think of anti-aging not as fighting against the clock, but as supporting your skin and body so you continue to look and feel your best at every stage of life. Aging is natural. We can understand it, embrace it, and take steps to soften its visible effects. Anti-aging is really about prevention, maintenance, and restoring balance so your skin, hair, and overall appearance reflect the energy you feel inside.
Now, let’s break it down!
What Happens As We Age?
Aging shows up in the skin, hair, and body in ways that are completely normal but sometimes feel frustrating. Some of the most common changes we see include:
-Collagen + Elastin Loss: Collagen and elastin are the two proteins that give skin its structure, firmness, and spring. Starting in your mid-20s, your body produces about 1% less collagen every year. That slow decline adds up: skin becomes thinner, fine lines start to appear, and areas that once felt plump or “bouncy” lose their resilience. Elastin, meanwhile, is what allows skin to snap back after stretching - so with less of it, skin can start to feel a bit looser, especially around the jawline and neck.
-Changes in Texture + Tone: In youth, your skin cells naturally renew themselves every 28 days. But as we age, that process slows down - stretching closer to 40–60 days. When dead cells linger on the surface, skin can look dull, rough, or uneven, and pigmentation like sun spots becomes more visible. This slower turnover also makes it harder for your skincare products to penetrate effectively, which is why exfoliating treatments and lasers can make such a difference.
-Volume Loss: Over time, the fat pads in the face begin to shrink and shift downward. In your 20s, those fat pads give cheeks their roundness and under-eyes their smoothness. With age, as they diminish, cheeks may appear flatter, under-eye hollows more noticeable, and the mid-face less lifted. Combined with changes in bone structure, this can subtly alter facial proportions, making the face look more tired even when you feel full of energy.
-Dynamic Lines: Every smile, squint, or frown creates tiny creases in the skin. In our younger years, skin’s elasticity allows those lines to spring back effortlessly. But with collagen and elastin loss, those repeated expressions start to “etch” into the skin, becoming permanent lines over time. That’s why crow’s feet, forehead lines, and the “11s” between the brows often become some of the first visible signs of aging.
-Hair Changes: Hair, too, reflects the aging process. Hormonal changes, stress, and genetics all play a role in making hair thinner, finer, or more sparse as the years go by. You might notice a widening part, a receding hairline, or overall reduced density. The texture of hair can change as well - sometimes becoming drier, coarser, or more fragile than it once was. While these changes are natural, they can have a big impact on confidence.
Anti-aging doesn’t mean erasing these changes completely. Instead, it means treating them with intention so you feel confident in the mirror at every age!
The Philosophy of Anti-Aging:
At Defy, we see anti-aging as a spectrum. It’s not about looking 25 forever - it’s about:
-Prevention: Starting small to keep changes at bay before they deepen.
-Correction: Addressing lines, pigment, or volume that already exist.
-Maintenance: Staying consistent so results last and continue to feel natural.
Our approach is always personalized. What anti-aging looks like for one person may be completely different for someone else. That’s why we encourage consultations, so we can meet you where you are and create a plan that feels comfortable and realistic for your goals.
Treatments That Support Healthy, Youthful Skin
So what does anti-aging look like in practice? Here are some of the most effective treatments we offer at Defy Aesthetic:
Botox & Neurotoxins: One of the most well-known anti-aging treatments, Botox (along with Dysport and Daxxify) relaxes the muscles that create fine lines and wrinkles. Forehead lines, frown lines (the “11s”), and crow’s feet all soften beautifully with consistent treatments. The goal isn’t to freeze your face, it’s to smooth lines while keeping your natural expressions.
-Fillers: Loss of volume is a hallmark of aging. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers (like Juvederm and Restylane) can restore plumpness to the cheeks, soften smile lines, and define the jawline. When done artfully, fillers create balance and harmony without looking “done.”
-Microneedling with PRP: Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, jumpstarting collagen and elastin production. Pair it with PRP (platelet-rich plasma from your own blood) and you supercharge the results - tighter, smoother, and more radiant skin.
-BBL + Moxi Laser Treatments: Sun damage, pigmentation, and uneven skin tone are some of the first signs of aging. BBL (Broadband Light) targets brown spots and redness, while Moxi works on tone and texture. Together, they help restore a clearer, brighter complexion.
-VI Chemical Peels: Gentle exfoliation treatments like chemical peels boost cell turnover, revealing fresher, more even-toned skin. Regular peels can soften fine lines and keep your complexion looking luminous.
-Medical-Grade Skincare: The foundation of anti-aging always starts with at-home care. Retinols, antioxidants like Vitamin C, and broad-spectrum sunscreen are essentials. Medical-grade formulas penetrate deeper and are proven to be more effective than over-the-counter options.
-PRP for Hair Restoration: Anti-aging isn’t just about skin - hair loss can be one of the most frustrating changes we face. PRP injections into the scalp stimulate dormant hair follicles, improving thickness and density naturally.
Lifestyle Factors Matter, Too:
Treatments can work wonders, but the truth is that lifestyle plays just as big of a role in how we age. A holistic approach to anti-aging also means:
-Protecting Your Skin from the Sun: Daily SPF is non-negotiable.
-Nutrition + Hydration: A diet rich in whole foods, antioxidants, and hydration supports skin health from within.
-Sleep + Stress Management: Restorative sleep and stress reduction help regulate hormones that impact your skin.
-Consistency: Just like fitness, skincare and treatments are about long-term habits - not quick fixes.
Anti-Aging at Defy: Our Approach
We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all formula. Anti-aging looks different for someone in their 30s starting Botox than it does for someone in their 50s working on restoring volume or evening out pigmentation. That’s why every treatment plan we design is individualized.
