Pregnancy Safe Facial

Pregnancy is a time of incredible change - not just emotionally and physically, but for your skin, too. Hormones are doing a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes, and your skin often shows it. For some, that means the elusive “pregnancy glow.” For others, it’s breakouts, blotchiness, dryness, or sensitivities you’ve never dealt with before. And with so much conflicting information online, it can be hard to know what’s truly safe when it comes to skincare during pregnancy. At Defy Aesthetic, we believe you shouldn’t have to put your skincare routine on pause just because you’re expecting! The key is knowing what’s safe, what to avoid, and how to tailor treatments to your body’s changing needs. So let’s break it down: here’s everything you need to know about pregnancy-safe facials - and how we at Defy customize your experience to keep you (and your baby) safe, glowing, and confident.

Your Skin During Pregnancy: Why It Changes

First, a quick science moment. When you’re pregnant, hormonal shifts - particularly elevated estrogen, progesterone, and blood volume  - can have a profound impact on your skin. Here are some of the most common skin changes we see during pregnancy:

-Increased oil production and breakouts (even if you never had acne before)

-Melasma (aka “the mask of pregnancy”) the patches of hyperpigmentation often on the cheeks, upper lip, or forehead

-Sensitivity or redness

-Dryness or flakiness

-Skin that suddenly reacts to products you’ve used for years

That’s why facials during pregnancy need to be gentler, more hydrating, and entirely free of ingredients that can be harmful to your baby.

What’s Safe (And Glowing!) During Pregnancy

At Defy Aesthetic, we carefully select and tailor every facial for our pregnant clients. Here are some of the treatments and ingredients we confidently use:

Dermaplaning:

Yes - dermaplaning is safe during pregnancy! This gentle, non-invasive exfoliation method uses a sterile blade to remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz, revealing a smoother and more radiant complexion. Since it doesn’t involve heat, chemicals, or downtime, it’s a favorite for our expecting clients.

Enzyme-Based Exfoliation:

Instead of chemical peels (which often contain salicylic or glycolic acid in high concentrations), we opt for fruit enzyme-based exfoliants - think papaya or pumpkin - that are gentle but effective at sloughing off dead skin without irritating sensitive pregnancy skin.

 Hydrating + Soothing Masks:

Hydration is your skin’s best friend during pregnancy. We incorporate hyaluronic acid (which is completely pregnancy-safe), aloe, chamomile, oat extract, and other calming ingredients to combat dryness and reduce inflammation.

Light Lymphatic Drainage Massage:

Facial puffiness is common during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Lymphatic drainage massage helps reduce swelling, boost circulation, and promote detoxification. Plus, it feels incredible.

LED Light Therapy (Red Light Only):

Red LED light is safe during pregnancy and supports skin healing, reduces inflammation, and promotes collagen production. We avoid blue light LED, as it hasn’t been extensively studied in pregnancy and may be more stimulating than soothing.

What to Avoid: Ingredients + Treatments to Skip While Pregnant

There’s a long list of skincare ingredients you may use in your pre-pregnancy routine that aren’t considered safe during pregnancy. Here’s what we steer clear of:

-Retinoids (Retinol, Retin-A, Tretinoin): These Vitamin A derivatives are effective anti-aging and acne-fighting agents, but they’re a no-go during pregnancy due to potential birth defects.

-High Concentrations of Salicylic Acid: While small amounts in cleansers may be okay, we avoid high-strength BHA peels and spot treatments during pregnancy. We’ll use pregnancy-safe alternatives like lactic acid or azelaic acid instead.

-Benzoyl Peroxide: Often used to treat acne, benzoyl peroxide isn’t recommended during pregnancy due to limited safety data and its potential for irritation.

-Hydroquinone: A powerful skin lightener used for melasma or dark spots, hydroquinone is absorbed at higher rates through the skin - so we skip it entirely during pregnancy.

-Chemical Sunscreens with Oxybenzone or Avobenzone: While not part of a facial, we always recommend mineral SPF (like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) for daily use. Chemical filters like oxybenzone can potentially disrupt hormones.

-Aggressive Extractions, Microdermabrasion, or High-Heat Treatments:  Pregnancy skin tends to be more reactive. We avoid anything too abrasive, including harsh manual exfoliation or high-heat devices (like radiofrequency or lasers), which could cause inflammation or hyperpigmentation.

How We Adjust Facials for Pregnant Clients at Defy Aesthetic

Every facial at Defy starts with a personalized consultation—because no two pregnancies (or skin concerns) are the same. Here’s how we tailor your facial to keep both you and your baby safe:

-Ingredient Vetting: We double-check every product we use during your treatment for pregnancy safety. That includes serums, cleansers, masks, and even massage oils.

-Treatment Customization: Whether you’re dealing with hormonal breakouts, melasma, dryness, or just want to feel pampered, we customize every step of your facial to focus on hydration, gentle exfoliation, and barrier support.

-Propped-Up Positioning: Lying flat on your back for long periods - especially in the second and third trimester - can reduce blood flow. That’s why we use bolsters and props to keep you comfortable and slightly elevated throughout your facial.

-Fragrance-Free + Sensitivity-Conscious Options: Pregnancy can make you more sensitive to smells and ingredients. We have fragrance-free options and cooling techniques available upon request.
