How To Boost Collagen Production and Decrease Acne Scars

The truth is that acne scars are super common for anyone who has dealt with breakouts, and studies show that 95% of acne sufferers experience some degree of scarring. In most cases, scarring is a result of a destruction of collagen in the dermis. Seeking out treatments that will boost collagen production will not only benefit you from an anti-aging perspective, but offer an improvement in the tone and texture of the skin. As the skin starts to age, we notice an increase in fine lines, wrinkles and sagging. This is due to a decrease in collagen, which is a fibrous and supportive protein found in our body. Luckily, we offer some amazing treatments at our medspa in downtown Bethesda that are effective at removing the unwanted texture left behind from acne, all while boosting collagen production to keep skin looking younger, longer! Keep reading to learn all about our top 3 treatments to achieve your best skin!

  1. Laser Treatments:

Combining BBL (Broadband Light) and Moxi laser treatments offers a comprehensive solution for those with acne scarring and/or those looking to boost collagen production. (Check this video out for more details!) BBL targets unwanted pigmentation and redness, while Moxi improves skin texture. Together, they’re a powerful duo! This combination treatment will result in smoother, more even-toned skin with minimal downtime. By minimal downtime, we mean you can return to make up 24 hours after your treatment! Some people may experience some mild swelling underneath the eyes, but that resolves rather quickly. We also love these laser treatments because they’re quick - they take about 20 minutes after numbing! A BBL Photofacial for the face costs $600, while Moxi for the face is priced at $700. Combine the two together for $1,000. If you’re looking to correct acne scars or minimize signs of aging you likely need a series of 3-4 sessions for optimal results, followed by maintenance twice per year. We recommend scheduling a complimentary 15 minute consultation with one of our amazing Nurse Practitioners to decide if this, or another skin treatment, is the best option for you!

2. Chemical Peel:

A VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel containing a potent blend of ingredients, including TCA (Trichloroacetic acid) to stimulate collagen production, Salicylic Acid for exfoliation, Phenol to repair damaged skin layers, and Vitamin C to firm and brighten. This peel exfoliates the outer skin layers, revealing fresh, new skin beneath, which can reduce the appearance of acne scars. We apply the peel to your skin in the office and send you home with a post-care kit and instructions. There are some easy steps to follow at home and expect to start peeling on day 3! Peeling looks different for everyone, from mild flaking to heavy shedding, and lasts about 3-5 days. Typically, chemical peels cost between $250 and $400 per treatment. For optimal results, we recommend a series of 3 chemical peels spaced about a month apart!

#3. Microneedling with PRP:

Microneedling with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is highly effective for fading acne scars due to its multifaceted approach to skin rejuvenation. The microneedling process involves creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which stimulates the body's natural healing response and triggers collagen production. This treatment, sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy, helps to remodel scar tissue and smooth out uneven texture. This therefore leads to a reduction in the appearance of acne scars over time. When combining microneedling with PRP, we see an improvement in results and healing time. While you are numbing for the treatment, we draw a little bit of blood and spin it in a centrifuge. We then use the platelet-rich plasma from that blood sample to microneedle and inject into the skin during your treatment! We recommend 4-6 sessions about a month apart for correction of acne scars, with each session priced at $650. As far as down time, we recommend staying away from makeup, exercise and unapproved products for the skin for a minimum of 48 hours. It’s important to follow your post care instructions to avoid any unwanted complications and to ensure the best results possible

We love our Nurse Practitioner Lauren’s results after just 1 session of microneedling with PRP!

How many treatments you will need ultimately depends on the current state of your skin. However, my favorite rule of thumb is to estimate 3-4 sessions for CORRECTION and 1-2 sessions for PREVENTION! If you’re looking to correct acne scars or minimize signs of aging you likely need an initial series of 3-4 sessions for optimal results. From there, you can maintain these results by some sort of treatment every 6-12 months. For younger skin utilizing these treatments as a preventative way to boost collagen, and has nothing to correct, treatments 1-2 times per year will suffice!

While there are so many amazing options on the market for helping to boost collagen production and decrease acne scarring, these are just our favorites! Although these treatments are not inexpensive, you will never regret investing in the health of your skin. Stay tuned for our blog post about simple ways to continue to protect your investment.
